GK Canico Village is the pilot Gawad Kalinga site in the Province of Surigao del Sur. It started in the year 2002, after the heirs of the late Canico P. Iriberri, donated a site equivalent to 2,000 square meters. Through “padugo” (bleeding for a cause), members of the Couples for Christ (CFC) throughout the province selflessly offered their time, talent and treasure by building the initial two houses. Some shared their hard earned money, donated hollow blocks, lumber material, plywood, common nails and labor for the cause of helping build not only houses but homes for the poor – putting into action the GK ideals that: “no one is so rich that that he cannot share and that no one is so poor that he cannot care!” The GK site relocated the marginalized fisherfolks who lived in shanties along the coast. They are the poorest of the poor residents of Barangay Consuelo.
